Strange Doings

Hector born 18 Jan 1893 baptised 23 Jan 1893

On 30 Jan 1894 parents register Canada birth of James Galarneau in Cambridge, Mass. stating birth 23 Jan 1893. Don't know why this US register of birth unless for immigration purposes. This shows a birth 5 days after Hector. So assume it refers to Hector.

Stranger still a Guibert Galarneau is born in Hull, Quebec on 20 JUN 1894 6 months after James birth registration or 1.5 years after Hector's birth.

Then 5 months later, on 20 NOV 1894 in Hull there is a death of their infant of 5 months. The name is stated to be Hector not Guibert even though Hector is going on 2 years.

Guibert is heard no more after this but Hector goes on even though he has been buried.

Maybe had something to do with the Immigration Restriction League that was founded in 1894 and feelings at the time.

From what I can gather, the Notre-Dame de Grace parish in Hull was established well before 1886. A mission was first set up in 1832 and a church was built in 1868. The canonical erection of the parish occured in 1870. In June 1888, the existing church burned down in a district fire and the records stored in that church were destroyed. The copy of these records, kept at the "Palais de Justice", escaped destruction. In April 1900, however, a second major fire burned down the "Palais de Justice" and all records stored therein. Notre-Dame de Grace church, which had been rebuilt after 1888, escaped that fire. The end result is that all the records prior to 1888 were apparently now gone forever and we would be left with the post 1888 records that were in the new church not destroyed in that 1900 fire. However, for a reason that escapes me at this time, it appears that it is only the records prior to September 1886 that were permanently lost.


Marriage record show Long Island as place of birth. Long Island is near Manotick in the Rideau River just south of Ottawa.

Mpls City Directory 1901 shows John B Galarneau as working at car repair Soo Shops. Must be Soo Line Railroad.Understanding is the railroad sent hi to work in Montana where he died.

Mpls City Directory 1902 shows Mary Galarneau as widow of John. and living with sons, John, Oliver, and Joseph. No mention of Richard or Hector.
