Obituary~
Edith H. Richey, age 91, of Winona, formerly of Litchfield, died on Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at Saint Anne Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 3, 2008, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Lindhorst officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the services at the church. Interment will be held in the Lake Ripley Cemetery.

Edith Hazel Richey, the daughter of Albert and Laura (Chamberlain) Galarneau, was born on May 10, 1916, in Faribault, Minn. She grew up and received her education in the Litchfield area. On Sept. 10, 1935, she was united in marriage to Harland Richey. They engaged in farming in the Litchfield and Watkins area for a few years before moving into Litchfield. In the mid 1960s they moved to the Brainerd area. After Harland's health failed they moved to Winona in 2001. Edith was a member of the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Litchfield. She enjoyed fishing, camping and dancing with Harland. She also enjoyed painting and music. She was very handy with her needle work and would often crochet elaborate designs without a pattern.

She is survived by her children, David (Margaret) Richey of St. Louis Park and Janice (Arnold) Dufseth of Rolling Stone, Minn.; grandchildren James (Kris) Dufseth, Jessica (Jeff) Hosch and Jeff (fiancee Lisa Thorn) Dufseth; great-grandchildren Morgen, Isabella and Cody. She is also survived by her sisters, Ruth Fogelstrom of Baudette, Marion Bengston of Sarasota, Fla., and Virginia Prieve of Litchfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harland in 2002, son Alfred, brother Bob Galarneau and sister, Margaret Sims. Hector born 18 Jan 1893

On 30 Jan 1894 parents register Canada birth of James Galarneau in Cambridge, Mass. stating birth 23 Jan 1893. Don't know why this US register of birth unless for immigration purposes. This shows a birth 5 days after Hector. So assume it refers to Hector.

Stranger still a Guibert Galarneau is born in Hull, Quebec on 20 JUN 1894 6 months after James or 1.5 years after Hector.

A mission was first set up in 1832 and a church was built in 1868. The canonical erection of the parish occured in 1870. In June 1888, the existing church burned down in a district fire and the records stored in that church were destroyed. The copy of these records, kept at the ""Palais de Justice"", escaped destruction. In April 1900, however, a second major fire burned down the ""Palais de Justice"" and all records stored therein. Notre-Dame de Grace church, which had been rebuilt after 1888, escaped that fire. The end result is that all the records prior to 1888 were apparently now gone forever and we would be left with the post 1888 records that were in the new church not destroyed in that 1900 fire. However, for a reason that escapes me at this time, it appears that it is only the records prior to September 1886 that were permanently lost.

Son frère Joseph était dailleurs témoin de son mariage.","tree1" "I0087","Galarneau","Joseph (Joseph Alexandre)","23 Dec 1888","18 Apr 1964","0","1900 census - mpls parents john b & mary born may 1890","tree1" "I0087","Galarneau","Joseph (Joseph Alexandre)","23 Dec 1888","18 Apr 1964","0","canada 1891 census shows 2 yrs with john a7 mary bothers john 3yr & orila 11 yr","tree1" "I0087","Galarneau","Joseph (Joseph Alexandre)","23 Dec 1888","18 Apr 1964","0","ontario births show parents jean baptiste galarneau and mary dunlevy 12-23-1888","tree1" "I0087","Galarneau","Joseph (Joseph Alexandre)","23 Dec 1888","18 Apr 1964","0","1930 Census Joseph G. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Thursday, December 26 at the Ecumen Augustana Chapel in Litchfield and also at the church for one hour prior to the service. Services will be conducted at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Litchfield on December 27, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Jay Panning officiating. Interment will be at Lake Ripley Cemetery, with military honors by the Litchfield Military Honor Guard.

Virginia was born on April 16, 1923 in Minneapolis MN to Albert and Laura Galarneau. She was the youngest of six children. As a young child, she was placed in foster care in Litchfield, as were her four sisters and one brother. Even though they were divided among several families, they were able to maintain a relationship over the years. Virginia was eventually adopted by Frank and Mabel Koktavy, who owned and operated the Electric Maid Bakery in Litchfield. They lived in an apartment above the bakery, so Virginia considered Central Park to be her front yard, enjoying many hours playing with her friends and dolls on the bandstand. She graduated from Litchfield High School in the Class of ’41, whose motto was “If you can’t find a path, make one!” After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles to be near her brother Bob and his family, getting a job at a clothing factory. On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, she was walking home from the store with a friend when they saw people running out of their homes and screaming that the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor. It made such a huge impact on her that she joined the United States Navy and proudly served as a Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego.

On completion of her enlistment, she returned to Minneapolis and worked as a telephone operator. On a weekend visit to Litchfield to visit family, she met Oliver Prieve, who worked for her uncle Harry Radunz at his tire shop. They were married on July 5, 1947 at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Litchfield. Virginia continued to work as a telephone operator until their daughter Sandra Lee was born on September 16, 1949. Sandra passed away the following day due to complications at birth. Their daughter Susan Virginia was born on Sandra’s birthday in 1950, followed by Gary Oliver in 1953 and Sara Jane in 1961. Ginger was an excellent cook and enjoyed baking and canning. She was also a very talented seamstress and made over 300 Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, as well as several hundred baby bibs decorated with her counted cross-stitch designs. Family was always very important to her.

Ginger began working at Bethany Home in Litchfield in 1974, becoming the head of the housekeeping department. She loved her job and stayed there for 18 years, until her retirement in 1992. She repeatedly told her family members that she wanted to live there one day when she could no longer be in her home, because she liked it there so well.

She was a very active member of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, leader of the Lutheran Girl Pioneers, a member of Ladies’ Aid, choir, Altar Guild, and in any other capacity where she could be of help.

Upon Ollie’s death on March 25, 2004, Ginger continued to live alone in the home they had shared for nearly 57 years. At her request, she moved into Bethany Assisted Living on her 85th birthday. She loved the many activities and friendships there, even reuniting with some of her high school classmates and church friends. She served as President of the Residents’ Council, saying that all she really had to do was attend meetings, drink coffee, and eat cookies! In the last several years, she faced the struggles of dementia/Alzheimer’s disease. The family is eternally grateful to the wonderful staff at Bethany and Gloria Dei for the kindness and compassion shown to Ginger, and the dedicated attention, patience, and love that they gave her day after day.

Ginger was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ollie; her infant daughter, Sandra Lee; her parents, Frank, Mabel, Albert and Laura; her brother, Robert Galarneau; her sisters, Ruth Fogelstrom, Edith Richey, Mariann Bengtson, and Margaret Adams, her son-in-law, Jack Fider; and many other family members and friends.

She is survived by her children; Susan (Steven) Ulrick of Wichita Falls, TX, Gary (Linda) Prieve of Litchfield, and Sara Fider of Mandan, ND. She is also survived by grandchildren; Steven (Becky) Ulrick, Scott (Amber) Ulrick, Melissa Prieve, Laura (Dan) Talvitie, Adam Prieve, Dana (Jason) Splonskowski, Beth (Justin) Goetz, Michael Huncovsky, and Gretchen (Robert) Chilson, as well as 22 Great-Grandchildren; Allison, Anna, Avery, Alenia, Audie, Amelia, Anthony, Alex, Zoey, Tifani, Trinity, Christian, Dayla, Hannah, Matthew, Megan, Maddox, Elise Virginia, Isaac, Jacob, Robert and Miles.","tree1" "I0535","Gobe","Louisa Margaret","12 Dec 1841","12 May 1906","0","Death notice shows widowed father Lewis Gobe born Germany","tree1"

Published: Friday, August 19th, 2011

Researchers with the South Dakota State Historical Society recently played a key role in solving a 32-year-old mystery involving the death of a Civil War veteran.

In 1979, a home in Warner owned at the time by Gerold Zumbaum, was raised from its foundation, revealing an 1893 marble headstone issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and inscribed “SERGT. J.F. KINNA, CO.C., 12OHIO.CAV.” The stone made its way to a basement where it stayed for the next 32 years. Eventually Brown County Centennial Village in Aberdeen became caretakers of the stone, where it was later included in their mock cemetery.

Through the years, questions about the stone remained unanswered, such as: Who was this Sgt J.F. Kinna that served in the Ohio Cavalry during the Civil War? If not buried in Aberdeen, where was this soldier’s grave?

Some Aberdeen-area veterans heard of the stone and felt it would be better to place the stone at the originally intended gravesite. After exhausting local resources, they contacted the State Historical Society-Archives at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. It is at this time that Virginia Hanson and Lori Carpenter became involved in the search. After an extensive search of the State Archives’ diverse resources, Kinna’s life story began to emerge.

Hanson, the primary researcher, first looked for information about Kinna in WPA cemetery records, where she found out his full name was Jacob Franklin Kinna, and he was buried in Yankton. From there she went to the society’s microfilm newspaper collection and was able to find articles about Kinna’s death in 1893. Hanson also utilized census records, Civil War records and land records to piece together Kinna’s story. Carpenter conducted several personal interviews.

“It’s one of the more interesting research projects I’ve been involved with,” Hanson said. “There’s more to the story than just finding his burial location. Here is a man who is part of our history. This is saving South Dakota history.”

On Saturday, Sept. 10, at Yankton Cemetery in Yankton, the once forgotten stone will at last mark the site of Kinna’s remains. Military Honor Guards are expected to attend the installation of the stone for this Civil War soldier.

Born in 1840 at Virginia to Catherine and Samuel Kinna, Jacob Franklin Kinna grew to manhood in Maryland. By the age of 20, Kinna accepted employment as a wagon master at Jackson, Md. On Oct. 23, 1863, Kinna resided in Ohio where he enlisted into Company C, 12th regiment, Ohio Cavalry division as a Corporal for the Union Army. His unit remained at Camp Chase until February 1864. The company received orders sending them to Nashville on March 31, 1864. During the War of the Rebellion, Kinna and Company C saw action at Mount Sterling, Ky.; Bristol, Tenn., and Dallas, N.C. His war service ended at Nashville, Tenn., on Nov. 14, 1865.

By 1870, Jacob had married Rebecca. Children born of this union were Charles H. and Clayton, both of whom were born at Indiana. At age 40, Jacob was a widowed wagon maker at Alvin, IL. On Sept. 13, 1881, Louisa McClellan and Jacob received a marriage license at Vermillion County, IL. Between 1882 and 1890, Kinna made his way from Illinois to Ordway, S.D. From Ordway he traveled to Yankton, where he made his home two miles west of the township. Although a resident of the Yankton area, Kinna retained membership with Aberdeen’s Robert Anderson Post 19 Grand Army of the Republic for Civil War veterans.

On Dec. 2, 1893, Kinna sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder while attempting to evict a trespassing hunter from his property. After the shooting, Kinna acquired an infection known as grippe and he died on Dec. 20, 1893. Burial occurred in an unmarked grave at Yankton Cemetery in block 716 grave site 25, under the auspices of Phil Kearney Post 7 GAR","tree1" "I0279","Langlois","Marguerite","1592","17 Dec 1665","0","Elle est la soeur de Francoise mariée avec Pierre Desportes
